Tax Residency Certificate (TRC)

Hassle-free Tax Residency Certificate (TRC) and Form 10F support in Goa — so residents, NRIs and foreign entities can claim DTAA treaty benefits, reduce withholding tax and avoid being taxed twice on the same income.

Overview

Claim your treaty benefits with the right TRC.

A Tax Residency Certificate (TRC) is official proof of which country a person or entity is a tax resident of. It is the key document for claiming relief under a Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA), so that income is not taxed in full in both countries.

We help Indian residents obtain a TRC from the income-tax department (application in Form 10FA, certificate in Form 10FB), and assist NRIs and foreign companies in using their home-country TRC with an electronically filed Form 10F. We then align it with your cross-border tax position and remittance filings.

Frequently asked questions

Tax Residency Certificate, answered.

What is a Tax Residency Certificate (TRC)?

A Tax Residency Certificate is an official document confirming that a person or entity is a tax resident of a particular country for a given period. It is required to claim benefits under a Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA) so that the same income is not fully taxed in two countries.

Why do I need a TRC?

A TRC lets you access lower DTAA tax rates and relief on cross-border income such as dividends, interest, royalties, fees for technical services and capital gains. Without a valid TRC, the payer or tax authority may apply the higher domestic withholding rate.

How does an Indian resident obtain a TRC?

An Indian resident applies to the income-tax department in Form 10FA, and the department issues the certificate in Form 10FB. It is typically needed when a resident earns income abroad and wants to claim treaty relief in the other country. We prepare and file the application for you.

What is Form 10F and who files it?

Form 10F is a declaration that supplies the additional details a TRC may not contain, and must now be filed electronically on the income-tax portal. Non-residents and foreign companies claiming DTAA benefits on Indian income generally need to file Form 10F along with their home-country TRC. We handle the e-filing.

Can an NRI claim DTAA benefits with a TRC?

Yes. An NRI who is a tax resident of another country can use that country's TRC, together with Form 10F and the required declarations, to claim the beneficial treaty rate on Indian income such as interest, dividends or capital gains. We assess the treaty and help apply the correct rate.

How long is a TRC valid?

A TRC is generally valid for the financial year or period it certifies, so a fresh certificate is usually required for each year in which you wish to claim treaty benefits. We track renewals so your relief is not interrupted.

Is a TRC enough to avoid double taxation?

A TRC is the essential starting document, but treaty relief also depends on satisfying the relevant DTAA conditions and providing supporting declarations such as Form 10F and beneficial-ownership confirmations. We review the full position so the benefit is correctly and safely claimed.
